Theatre Classes at Green Hope

theatre arts beginningTheatre Arts Level I is both the introductory and exploratory class to the theatre arts elective at Green Hope High School. All students, regardless of experience, are required to take level I. In rare cases, an audition can be scheduled for consideration to begin in a higher level of the theatre arts elective. In this class, students are introduced to all aspects of the theatre. From acting & directing, to production and design, to playwriting and theatre history, to dramaturgy and more, students can expect to learn a base level of understanding that will help them both appreciate the world of theatre as well as discover what area they might be interested in pursuing at the higher levels.

Theatre intermediateTheatre Arts Level II is the beginning of a more intensive study in the techniques acting, directing, and dramaturgy. At this level, students will begin to learn about how control of movement, control of voice, and vulnerability are the essential ingredients to creating believable characters on the stage. Students will experience units of study in Shakespeare, Contemporary Scene Work, Play Analysis, Directing, and more. Theatre Arts Level II also continues their study in technical theatre and design by advancing their skills in all areas.

Theatre Arts proficient honorsTheatre Arts Level III continues to the study of character work established in level II and with a greater focus on communication and ensemble work. Students in Level III will be introduced to honors level curriculum by studying selections of texts from the world’s most renowned theatre artists, such as Constantin Stanislovski, Michael Checkhov, Cecil Berry, Sanford Meisner, and more. Students in Level III will also work collaboratively as a class to tech the theatre IV advanced play. This level of the theatre arts curriculum is designed for the serious and dedicated student in the craft of acting/directing/design/stage management/ and more. Students in this class are expected to come to the class ready to push their understanding of the theatre, take risks in their work, and build their techniques in excellent communication, creativity, and collaboration.

Theatre arts advanced honors Theatre Arts Level IV is the culmination of three years of study in the craft of acting, directing, design, and dramaturgy. Students at this level will continue their honors curriculum by learning and incorporating the teachings of world-renowned theatre artists such as Constantin Stanislovski, Michael Checkhov, Cecil Berry, Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Uta Hagen, and more. Students in this level will also perform a full-length spring play as part of the Green Hope Theatre Season. The expectations of attendance remain the same at this level as in level III. In addition to the spring play, Students at this level will also study the professional industry of the theatre, the art of the audition, tech interviews, portfolios, and more. This level in the theatre arts curriculum is designed for the student who is planning on pursuing a college degree, career, or further study of theatre after high school. Excellence is expected in all areas of study.
